Nickie Hunter is the State Construction Engineer and Administrator of NHDOT’s Bureau of Construction. Nickie, a native of Tuftonboro, NH, began her career with NHDOT in November of 1994 after working with Maine DOT’s Bridge Construction Bureau in 1993 and 1994. She spent the first 12 years with NHDOT in the field as an inspector and Contract Administrator on many bridge and roadway reconstruction projects, including several as part of the F.E. Everett Turnpike expansion in Nashua in the mid to late 1990s before moving on to projects in the Seacoast and Lakes Region. From 2007 to 2022, Nickie was a District Construction Engineer serving time in both the North Country and the Seacoast Regions. Notable projects as a DCE included delivery of the Northeast’s first Open-Road Tolling project on I-95 in Hampton; the award-winning Design-Build Memorial Bridge project in Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME; and the completion of the $180 million Spaulding Turnpike expansion in Newington and Dover. She has served 16 years on NHDOT’s Traffic Control Committee and has over 12 years of experience in alternative project delivery methods, such as Design-Build and CMGC. In 2023, Nickie received “Woman of the Year” honors from WTS-NH. WTS is an international organization established in 1977 that helps women find opportunity and recognition in the transportation industry. Nickie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from WPI in 1993 and a master’s in business administration from SNHU in 1999. In 2017, Nickie was inducted into WPI’s Hall of Fame for Field Hockey and Softball. In the fall she volunteers as an assistant field hockey coach at her alma mater, Kingswood Regional High School and plays trumpet and handbells at her local church in Melvin Village where she has served several committees and roles. One of Nickie’s favorite books is The Speed of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything by Stephen Covey.
